knight news challenge

The deadline is tonight for the Knight News Challenge, a rare chance where $5 million is up for grabs for new ideas for journalism. I went to their meetup in San Francisco a few weeks ago. Basically, ideas vying for the prize have to meet three key conditions:

  1. Use open-technology
  2. Serve the public interest
  3. Serve a specific geographic community

The initial application only requires short answers to a few questions, so really there’s no reason for someone with a good idea not to put in an application and hope for the best. I wish the grant had less emphasis on serving a specific local community, since I think the real problem for journalism is developing a broader business model that could be applied widely — and draws a wide audience.
